Cervical Cancer Screening: New Options and Why Your Provider Still Matters

4/20/2026

Picture
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, thanks to routine screening and early detection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular screening can identify abnormal cell changes before they develop into cancer, significantly reducing both incidence and mortality rates.

Why Screening Is So Important
Most cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Screening tests—such as Pap tests and HPV tests—can detect these changes early, often before symptoms appear.
The CDC recommends that individuals begin cervical cancer screening at age 21 and continue at regular intervals depending on age, health history, and type of test used.

A New Option: At-Home Self-Swab Testing
Recent advancements in medical research have introduced self-collected HPV testing, often referred to as “self-swab” testing. Studies published in journals such as The Lancet Public Health and supported by organizations like the World Health Organization show that self-collected HPV samples can be highly effective in detecting high-risk HPV infections.
This innovation is especially promising because it:
  • Increases access for individuals who may face barriers to in-clinic screening
  • Offers a more private and convenient option
  • May help improve overall screening rates in underserved populations

Why Talking to Your Provider Still Matters
While self-swab testing is an exciting development, it does not replace the need for personalized medical guidance.
A healthcare provider can help:
  • Determine which screening method is most appropriate
  • Recommend how often screening should occur
  • Interpret results and guide next steps if follow-up is needed
  • Consider individual factors such as age, medical history, and risk level
Screening is not one-size-fits-all, and having a conversation with your provider ensures you receive care that is tailored to your specific needs.

Taking the Next Step
Whether you are due for screening or simply have questions about your options, talking with your provider is the best place to start. With new tools and evolving guidelines, there are more ways than ever to take charge of your health—while still benefiting from expert guidance.

Call RCMS today to schedule your next appointment: (707) 884-4005.

Portable Generator Safety: What You Need to Know

12/5/2025

Picture
During power outages, portable generators can be extremely helpful—but they also pose serious safety risks if not used correctly. To keep yourself and your household safe, please follow these important guidelines:
  • Never connect a portable generator directly to your home’s wiring. These devices are designed to power only selected appliances or lamps.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer instructions before starting your generator.
  • Do not exceed the generator’s rated load. Make sure the total wattage of all connected items stays within the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Always place your generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep extension cords properly sized and in good condition. Overloaded or damaged cords can overheat and cause a fire.
  • Avoid tripping hazards. Keep cords visible and clear of doorways. Never run cords under rugs or carpets.
  • Prioritize power needs by using the lowest-wattage bulbs and limiting appliance use to conserve fuel.

Health Risks of Poor Generator Ventilation
Improperly ventilated generators can produce deadly levels of carbon monoxide (CO)—an invisible, odorless gas that can cause:
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness
  • Death, often within minutes in high concentrations

To prevent CO poisoning:
  • Never use a generator indoors, including garages, basements, crawl spaces, sheds, or partially enclosed spaces—even with doors or windows open.
  • Position the generator at least 20 feet from your home, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors, and vents.
  • Install battery-operated CO detectors in your home and test them regularly.

Stay Safe During Outages
With proper setup and ventilation, generators can be a safe and effective backup power source. For more detailed guidance, please visit: Backup Power Safety
