We Want to Hear From You! 7/15/25

We Want to Hear From You!
At RCMS, your voice matters. That’s why we regularly invite patients to share their experiences through a quick survey—so we can better understand what we’re doing well and where we can improve.

Every response is reviewed by our Performance and Quality Improvement teams and directly informs how we deliver care. Your feedback helps us grow, adapt, and provide the best possible service to our community.

Here are some excerpts from our recent survey responses:

"I was a bit stressed out and couldn't have gotten better care anywhere."

"Excellent care, wonderful staff."

"I found the entire staff excellent. Their care along with follow up with my RCMS provider (they're great) gave me a Dx and Tx plan. Could not have asked for a better experience with caring and competent care!"

"I was on vacation in Sea Ranch when my sickness got serious. I am so grateful for your facility and services. I fell that my examination and treatment were very thorough. Everyone treated me with kindness and compassion. You were very busy that day but I never felt neglected and understood everyone was addressing my case as quickly as possible. Thank you so much!"

Help shape the future of your care—take the survey today!

Financial Snapshot from June 25, 2025 Board Meeting

7/11/2025

Picture
RCMS Treasurer’s Financial Snapshot by Drew McCalley

As of the end of May, with one month remaining in our fiscal year, our financial condition remains strong.  Primary Care visits and patient service revenue continued to improve in May, though still below budgeted amounts.  Expenses were a bit over budget, due to some timing differences, but the bottom line turned positive for the month, due to receipt of an Employee Retention Credit (ERC) from IRS as a delayed reward for the fact that RCMS retained all employees throughout the pandemic, even as revenues took a dive during that period.  The ERC is a partial refund of employer payroll taxes for that period.  We received another substantial ERC payment in June, which will fill in all of our bottom line deficit year to date.  All of our other revenue sources remained stable, for now, including federal grants and Medi-Cal payment levels.  Despite all of the news about potential cutbacks in federal funding for healthcare, we have ample cash reserves to withstand any funding cuts for an extended period of time.

Details on the latest financial results can be found in the board meeting packet for June 25, 2025, on the RCMS website:

July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month

7/8/2025

Picture
July is the time to elevate awareness about juvenile arthritis and help make a difference in the lives of the hundreds of thousands of kids in the U.S. who live with it.

Together with the JA community and partners, the Arthritis Foundation shines an even brighter light on the challenges of JA and the hundreds of thousands of kids in the U.S. who live with it.

The goal of Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month is to spread the word that kids get arthritis, too. Most people are surprised to learn that arthritis isn’t “just an old person’s disease” and can affect children as young as just a few months old.

The Arthritis Foundation and its partners lead advocacy and research to improve access to care and provide resources that support JA families. Foundation partners include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Childhood Arthritis Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA), Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII) and countless other organizations and individuals.

While there is no cure for juvenile arthritis, the work of the Arthritis Foundation and its research partners have expanded the ways to manage and treat it.

And the Survey Says (june 5, 2025)...

6/13/2025

Picture
We send surveys to our patients to get their feedback on our service. The feedback helps us know what we are doing right and where we can get better.

The results of the survey are used by our performance improvement and quality improvement teams and are actively used to improve our delivery and provide you with the best possible service.

Here are some excerpts from our survey responses:

"A very compassionate medical team."

"Thank you for being in the community. I appreciate the service."

"Care was adequate - downgrading for long waiting time."

"It was a good choice to go to RCMS Urgent Care. Did not get an infection which I was concerned about."

"Urgent care staff were wonderful, very professional, and caring. I was in a lot of pain."

Treasurer’s Financial Snapshot from May 28, 2025

RCMS Treasurer’s Financial Snapshot by Drew McCalley

As of the end of April, ten months into our fiscal year, our financial condition remains strong. With a new full-time MD and a new full-time PA now seeing patients, Primary Care visits and patient service revenue were up in April, though still below budgeted amounts. Expenses also remained under budget, and this month they were more under budget than patient revenue, so the net was positive versus the budget. All of our other revenue sources remained stable, for now. As a result, the bottom line was positive for the month, although it remained substantially negative for the fiscal year to date. We expect May financial results to be very positive, due to some large non-operational revenues coming in during the month. Despite all of the news about potential cutbacks in federal funding for healthcare, we have ample cash reserves to withstand any funding cuts for an extended period of time.

CEO Report Notes from May 28, 2025 Board Meeting

6/10/2025

Picture
The following is an outline of comments from the CEO at the recent Redwood Coast Medical Services (RCMS) Board Meeting.

Community Outreach
  • RCMS donated, supported, and participated in the annual Waves & Whales 5K Trail Run/Walk, which was held on the Mendocino Coast in Point Arena. Proceeds from the Waves & Whales Trail Run support ACORN Partners in Education in their environmental stewardship programs for school children in our community.

Organizational/Operational update
  • We continue to prepare for our HRSA OSV scheduled July 22 – 24. The first pass of most of our documentation is complete at this time. We will soon start loading them to the appropriate online site as required by the OSV team. Again, a reminder for board members to be available during that time.
  • We had a comprehensive visit from our IT partner, Maxwell IT, last week. They spent two full days here. They addressed most of the issues caused by the failure of our UPS systems a few weeks back during the PG&E power outage. They also analyzed the key elements of our computer and communication infrastructure and will be putting together a near-term as well as a multi-year long-term upgrade plan. We should be getting some details about that in the next couple of weeks. While they were here, we also talked about better coordination between our on-site team and their engineers.
  • I had reported in the past that we were looking at a NextGen AI-based toolset called Ambient AI to help our providers automatically document important information in patients' charts based on the conversation they were having with the patient during the visit. After the initial testing, we have decided not to go forward with the implementation of that product at this time. We plan to revisit this at a later time and do more testing.
  • Our leases for Point Arena medical and dental buildings are expiring at the end of June. We are currently working on renewing those leases.
  • Mendocino County has changed or corrected the building addressing scheme for Ocean Drive. This has caused some confusion with our Genoa Pharmacy’s physical address. We are addressing that.
  • Recently, as part of our emergency preparedness activities, we did a Tsunami evacuation drill at our Medical and Dental facilities in Point Arena. These two buildings fall in the Tsunami hazard zone as defined by USGS. We are also planning an emergency evacuation procedure practice drill for the Gualala building.
  • We are in the process of getting an eye examination equipment that will be used to do in house screening for Diabetic Retinopathy. Once set up and our staff is trained on this device, this will significantly help our providers to do Diabetic Retinopathy diagnostics for our patients during a regular visit and will prevent, in many cases, annual out of town visit to eye specialist.
  • Facilities expansion project – we plan to report to the board next month on where we are with planning, county approvals, results of the feasibility study of the consulting group we engaged, and what is our recommendation to the board going forward.
