Bequests and Retirement Plans
Your charitable bequest is the most important type of gift for building RCMS’s future. Many RCMS supporters choose to name RCMS as a beneficiary of a will or living/revocable trust. This is one of the most common and simple ways to leave a legacy gift. You can also name RCMS as a beneficiary of a retirement plan – IRA, 401(k), 403(b), ESOP, etc. – which may enable you to make a larger gift than you anticipated because income and estate taxes are not imposed when retirement plan assets are left to a charity.
If you are considering a bequest to RCMS, it is important to discuss all of the consequences of such a bequest with your own advisors.
If you have an existing will or living trust, a codicil or amendment, respectively, can be written to include RCMS as a beneficiary.
Like all gifts made to RCMS, you may designate the gift to be unrestricted or restricted to a specific program or area of activity. If you are considering a restriction we encourage dialogue now to ensure that your wishes are honored.
You can also obtain income enhancement opportunities during your lifetime as well as substantial tax benefits by making a gift of stock, property, or other appreciated assets using a variety of estate planning tools.

You may include RCMS in your will or living trust by using the following language:
DOLLAR AMOUNT “I give, devise, and bequeath to RCMS, a nonprofit California Corporation, PO Box 1100, Gualala CA, (indicate the dollar amount).” |
SPECIFIC PROPERTY “I give, devise, and bequeath to RCMS, a nonprofit California Corporation, PO Box 1100, Gualala CA, my interest in (describe property and exact location).” |
PERCENTAGE “I give, devise, and bequeath to RCMS, a nonprofit California Corporation, PO Box 1100, Gualala CA, _______% of my estate.” |
The IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution
The IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution is a permanent provision of the federal tax code. This allows donors who are 70 ½ or older to make a tax-free contribution to RCMS or other charities. You can donate up to $100,000 in each year from your IRA. The contribution counts towards your Required Minimum Distribution. It does not generate either taxable income or a charitable tax deduction for you. A gift from your IRA provides an excellent opportunity to make a gift during your lifetime from an asset that is often subject to multiple layers of taxation if left in your estate.
Transfers must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA plan administrator. Gifts from 401(k), 403(b), SEP, or other plans do not qualify for this provision. Contact you plan administrator to initiate.

Other legacy gifts include:
Life Income Gifts A life income gift provides a future source of funding for RCMS while also providing a tax deduction and payments to you and/or your loved ones. Giving options are flexible with payments to you that can be fixed, variable, or deferred. |
Charitable Lead Trusts You can use a charitable lead trust to transfer assets to loved ones and reduce gift and estate taxes by a significant amount. The trust allows you to provide immediate support to RCMS through a fixed payment for a specified term. At the end of the term, the trust will transfer all remaining assets to designated heirs with reduced or no estate and gift tax. |
Retained Life Estate Generate a current income tax deduction by giving a home to RCMS, while retaining the right to use the property during your lifetime. |
