About Covered California
Covered California is the place where Californians can get brand-name health insurance under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It’s the only place to get federal premium assistance to help you buy private insurance from companies like the ones listed on the right. That means you may qualify for a discount on private insurance, or get health insurance through the state’s Medi-Cal program. Either way, you’ll get great health coverage.
All Californians can sign up during the annual open-enrollment period, which begins in the fall. Many others may be eligible to sign up at any time during the year due to a life-changing event such as getting married, having a child, moving or losing your healthcare coverage.
Medi-Cal enrollment is year-round, as well.

Renewing Your Plan
Covered California
It is important to take a look at your health plan during renewal because the plan options and rates in your area change each year, and you may qualify for a different amount of financial help, especially if things like your income, family size and address have changed during the year.
Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal renewals happen throughout the year, on the anniversary of the member’s enrollment in Medi-Cal. This means that a Medi-Cal renewal may or may not coincide with a Covered California renewal.
If someone in your family has Medi-Cal, they will receive a Medi-Cal renewal form from their local county human services agency. Complete the form and mail or fax it, along with any needed information the county requests, to your local county human services agency. You can also renew by visiting your county human services agency in person or by calling the phone number on the renewal notice.

Get Your Tax Credits
Whether you change your health plan or are automatically renewed in the same plan, there are two important things that you will need to do in order for Covered California to be able to calculate and apply financial help through tax credits to your coverage:
- Consent to check your information. Your consent is needed so that Covered California can check your information with federal government data sources. Without your consent to obtain this information, we do not have the information we need to calculate and apply tax credits to your new health plan. You can give consent by logging into your Covered California online account or by calling Covered California.
- Make sure you filed your federal income taxes for the previous tax year. Filing your federal income taxes is also necessary in order to receive tax credits for coverage.
