About Covered California

Picture
Covered California is the place where Californians can get brand-name health insurance under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It’s the only place to get federal premium assistance to help you buy private insurance from companies like the ones listed on the right. That means you may qualify for a discount on private insurance, or get health insurance through the state’s Medi-Cal program. Either way, you’ll get great health coverage.

All Californians can sign up during the annual open-enrollment period, which begins in the fall. Many others may be eligible to sign up at any time during the year due to a life-changing event such as getting married, having a child, moving or losing your healthcare coverage.
Medi-Cal enrollment is year-round, as well.
Frequently Asked Questions

Renewing Your Plan

Covered California

It is important to take a look at your health plan during renewal because the plan options and rates in your area change each year, and you may qualify for a different amount of financial help, especially if things like your income, family size and address have changed during the year.

Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal members must renew their coverage each year to keep their health care benefits.

For most members, coverage is renewed automatically. Sometimes the county will send you a renewal form that you must review and return, along with any additional required information.

Medi-Cal renewals can be completed online. Visit www.BenefitsCal.com to renew your Medi-Cal plan.

Get Your Tax Credits

Picture
Health insurance tax credits are financial help from the federal government that lower your monthly premium. That’s why they are referred to as premium tax credits. And Covered California has helped millions of residents receive these subsidies.

You can get this financial help as a reduction to your monthly premium. Or you can choose to receive it as one lump sum come tax time. The amount is based on your household income. So if you make more or less money than when you applied, your financial help could also change. To avoid any surprises come tax season, report these changes to Covered California.
