And the Survey Says...October 24'

10/17/2024

Picture
We send surveys to our patients to get their feedback on our service. The feedback helps us know what we are doing right and where we can get better.

The results of the survey are used by our performance improvement and quality improvement teams and are actively used to improve our delivery and provide you with the best possible service.

Here are some excerpts from our survey responses:

"Thank you! As a patient with stage 4 cancer it is a true blessing to be able to come 10 minutes from home and not 2 hours!"

"Just an overall amazing experience. We are so fortunate to have RCMS in the community."

"Wonderful care! (Due to emergency, I had to wait 45 minutes, but I felt very cared for once I was called in)."

"I was treated for severe knee pain. I came back for an x-ray and follow-up. I was given a referral for MRI when I returned home. Everyone was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I appreciate the great care I was given."

"RCMS staff were very professional, knowledgeable, courteous, smart, and nice to be around.

Financial Snap shot from September 25, 2024 Board Meeting

10/9/2024

Picture
The RCMS Board is committed to increasing transparency and communication with the community. Each month we will share a financial snapshot. Complete financial reports are available on our webpage via the link at the end of this post.

RCMS Treasurer’s Financial Snapshot by Drew McCalley

Two months into fiscal year 2025, our financial condition remains strong, but we continue to experience weakness in patient revenue, producing monthly and year-to-date losses in net income.  Various factors have contributed to a deficit in Primary Care visits, which is expected to be remedied in coming months through the diligent efforts of staff and management.  While revenues fell short of budgeted amounts, expenses remain under good control, and we feel confident that we can continue to meet whatever financial challenges arise.

Details on the latest financial results can be found in the board meeting packet for September 25, 2024, on the RCMS Board Page at:

CEO Report from September 25, 2024 Board Meeting

10/7/2024

Picture
The following is an outline of comments from the CEO at the recent Redwood Coast Medical Services (RCMS) Board Meeting.

Community Outreach
  • This Friday, Sept 27, KGUA will air an interview with me that was recorded earlier this month on the podcast ‘This Sea Ranch Live interview’. KGUA will air it at 9 am and 1 pm.  During this interview, I discussed the reasons, rationale, and status of the proposed annex expansion along with other RCMS-related topics.

Organizational/Operational update
  • RCMS Heliport – we are in the process of repainting the helipad to address chipped and faded paints. It is done in phases so that the heliport is always operational, for the right reasons. We will complete the work over the next couple of weeks. In another helipad-related activity, CALTRAN air transportation authority is visiting us this coming Monday for compliance inspection. We expect it to be fairly routine.
  • There is a health fair taking place at the Point Arena High School on Oct 2nd.  RCMS will participate there with two booths – one focusing on dental care, and the other one on medical care. We also continue to work with the school district and Action Network on Teen Clinics being held in our Point Arena Medical facility to provide sensitive services to teenagers.
  • We are participating in a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) simulation on November 16th. All local emergency care-providing entities will participate. It will simulate a school bus overturning at Timber Cove. The simulation will end with trauma patients being transferred to the RCMS Gualala facility.
  • We now have a security camera in our main building's upper parking lot. We had a situation there recently that could have been helped if we had the camera in place. At any rate, we have surveillance cameras in all our clinical facilities now.
  • This month we got the EJC parking lot repaired and resurfaced. While we are having some financial difficulties, some of this basic infrastructure work must go on. We also had EJC building outside painted a few weeks back.
  • As I mentioned last month – our compute and communication infrastructure and associated performance of our IT systems have been an issue for us for a long time. It continues to adversely impact our operation. As such, have decided to change our IT vendor and the transition process has started.
  • We have signed up with an organization called Confirmed. They provide eConsult to our primary care providers. Our providers can consult with about 300 clinical specialists covering over 70 different specialty areas. From allergy to cardiology to neurology to oncology and many others. This service is covered by MediCal for MediCal members – but we are providing this to all our patients at our own cost because Medicare and private insurance do not cover this service. For example -- a typical scenario could be that one of our providers finds an abnormal blood test results in one of our patients. The provider can consult a hematologist and can get guidance on what that abnormality means or how to treat it.

October is Dental Hygiene Month

10/5/2024

Picture
National Dental Hygiene Month is observed every October to celebrate the work of dental hygienists and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health. An essential component to our overall wellbeing, good oral hygiene is one building block of a healthy lifestyle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), oral diseases, which range from cavities and gum disease to oral cancer, cause debilitating pain for millions of Americans every year. Protecting your oral health by practicing good oral hygiene can substantially increase the likelihood of keeping your teeth for a lifetime. Below are tips for great oral health.

Brushing
  • Use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is what protects teeth from tooth decay and cavities. It prevents decay by strengthening the tooth’s hard outer surface, called enamel.
  • Angle your toothbrush bristles toward the gumline allowing them to clean between the gums and teeth.
  • Brush all the sides of each of your teeth gently, using small, circular motions, and avoid back and forth scrubbing.
  • Brush your tongue.

Flossing
  • Use a string of floss about two feet long. Wrap it around the middle finger of each hand and grip it between your thumb and index fingers.
  • Ease the floss gently between your teeth until it reaches the gumline (don’t force the floss into place as this could harm the gums). Curve the floss like the letter “C” around the side of each tooth. Slide the floss up and down under the gum.

Our dental and medical teams participated in the School Health Fair 2024 on Wednesday, October 2. Our dental team shared information on good oral health to the students.
