During National Volunteer Week, RCMS proudly recognizes and celebrates the individuals who give their time, energy, and compassion to support the health and well-being of our community. First established in 1974, this national observance is a time to honor volunteers across the country—and here on the coast, their impact is deeply felt.
Volunteers play a vital role in healthcare and beyond. They support patient care, assist with hospice services, help reduce barriers through transportation and food programs, and contribute to community health efforts like flu clinics. Their presence strengthens not only our services, but the sense of connection that defines our coastal communities. Here on the Mendocino–Sonoma Coast, volunteerism extends far beyond the clinic walls. Volunteers help bring our community to life—supporting organizations like the Gualala Arts Center, organizing Pay ’n’ Take sales, and contributing in countless ways that often go unseen but are always appreciated. At RCMS, we are deeply grateful for the dedication and generosity of our volunteers. Their willingness to show up, lend a hand, and care for others makes a lasting difference in the lives of our patients, staff, and neighbors. This week, we invite our community to join us in celebrating and thanking the volunteers who help make our work—and our community—stronger every day. April 19–25, 2026
During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, RCMS proudly recognizes the dedicated individuals who work behind the scenes to support patient care every day. Often unseen, laboratory professionals play a critical role in healthcare—providing the accurate, timely diagnostic results that guide medical decisions and improve patient outcomes. From blood tests and screenings to complex diagnostics, lab professionals are at the foundation of modern medicine. Their expertise, attention to detail, and commitment to quality ensure that providers have the information they need to deliver safe and effective care. This national recognition week, coordinated by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and partner organizations, highlights the essential contributions of laboratory teams and raises awareness about their role in healthcare. Why Lab Professionals Matter
At RCMS, we are proud of our laboratory team and grateful for their dedication, skill, and quiet leadership in patient care. Their work may happen behind the scenes, but its impact is felt in every diagnosis, every treatment plan, and every patient we serve. Please join us in thanking our lab professionals for the vital role they play in keeping our community healthy. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, thanks to routine screening and early detection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular screening can identify abnormal cell changes before they develop into cancer, significantly reducing both incidence and mortality rates.
Why Screening Is So Important Most cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Screening tests—such as Pap tests and HPV tests—can detect these changes early, often before symptoms appear. The CDC recommends that individuals begin cervical cancer screening at age 21 and continue at regular intervals depending on age, health history, and type of test used. A New Option: At-Home Self-Swab Testing Recent advancements in medical research have introduced self-collected HPV testing, often referred to as “self-swab” testing. Studies published in journals such as The Lancet Public Health and supported by organizations like the World Health Organization show that self-collected HPV samples can be highly effective in detecting high-risk HPV infections. This innovation is especially promising because it:
Why Talking to Your Provider Still Matters While self-swab testing is an exciting development, it does not replace the need for personalized medical guidance. A healthcare provider can help:
Taking the Next Step Whether you are due for screening or simply have questions about your options, talking with your provider is the best place to start. With new tools and evolving guidelines, there are more ways than ever to take charge of your health—while still benefiting from expert guidance.
