SHAMLI VOLUNTEER HOSPICE/RESPITE PROGRAM

Where loving support makes a difference to individuals and families facing
a short-term medical emergency, chronic illness, or the end of life.

All Shamli services are provided free to patients and families.

Shamli Hospice provides or makes possible:
     • a care plan for patient and family which addresses physical, psychological, spiritual and social
       needs at the end of life,
     • home care and dying at home in collaboration with other services when appropriate,
     • pain and symptom control by working in collaboration with the attending physician,
     • twenty-four hour, seven day a week care, including on-call professional staff,
     • individual and family emotional support to help persons cope during this stressful period,
     • bereavement and follow-up visitation and assessment,
     • emotional support, crisis intervention, information and referrals as needed,
     • referrals to and coordination with appropriate community agencies and resources.

Shamli Respite provides:
     • short term respite support for the caregiver of someone who has had a medical emergency,
        has a long-term diagnosis (such as Alzheimer’s), needs constant care or is just getting older,
     • short term support for someone who has had a medical emergency when there is no caregiver
        in the home and where help with shopping, taking walks, running errands can be of assistance
        during recovery,
     • referralsl to and coordination with appropriate community agencies and resources,
     • volunteer emotional support to help persons cope during this stressful period.

 

What a Shamli Volunteer can do for you:
     • companionship for the patient and family members
     • respite for the primary caregiver
     • running errands, grocery shopping, etc.
     • picking up prescriptions (with RN supervisory authorization)
     • gardening
     • relaxing massages for the patient and family members
     • reading to patients
     • walking pets
     • letter writing for patients
     • sitting with patients who are dying
     • visiting patients in their home
     • individual bereavement and bereavement support groups
